ABOUT
Hi, I’m Mackenzie.
I’m a baker, a storyteller, and a firm believer in a fuller table.
I’m a first-generation American Samoan, a home cook, a recipe developer, and the founder of Island Bakes. Food has always been how I make sense of the world - a way to stay connected to where I come from, to the people, and to the places food can take us.
Through baking, writing, teaching, and now this mail, I get to share a little of my kitchen with you - and hopefully inspire you to explore your own.
WHERE I COME FROM
Two worlds. One kitchen.
I was born in the U.S. and raised with deep roots in Samoa - a blend that has shaped how I see the world and how I cook. My family’s stories, our food, our culture, and our community have always been a part of me.
Island flavors, family gatherings, potlucks, late-night kitchen conversations - there are some of my earliest memories. They taught me that food isn’t just about what we eat, but ho we are and how we take care of each other.
Today, I carry both worlds with me, and I’m always looking for ways to honor where I come from while staying curious about where food can take us.
A FEW OF THE THINGS THAT SHAPE MY WORK
BEYOND BAKING
Pasifika Culinary Project
I’m also the fonder of the Pasifika Culinary Project (PCP), a nonprofit that uplifts Pacific Island food, culture and people through education, storytelling, and community. It’s another way I get to give back, create opportunity and help ensure our food stories continue for the next generation.
ON THE BIGGER STAGE
The Great American Baking Show
I was honored to win The Great American Baking Show, Season 2, where I got to share a it of my story, my flavors and my love for baking with a wider audience. It was an unforgettable experience that reminded how powerful food can be in bringing people together.
WHY I DO THIS
Food travels far.
Because food can carry our stories, connect us across generations and remind us that we all belong somewhere. That’s where Island Bakes is all about - and I’m so glad you are here.
